3.4 Leadership Mastery Journal Post (WordPress)

I really enjoy reading John Maxwell’s book “Developing the Leader Within you 2.0” (J. Maxwell, 2018). I think he’s very positive in his leadership skills and management. Everything he writes about seems to have a thought process behind it. A few years ago, I ran into his ad’s for speakers on the internet. I signed up for his newsletter and e-mails. He trains individuals to become motivational speakers. I couldn’t afford to take the class at the time, but I still receive the newsletter.

The book definitely gives you a step by step understanding of his leadership style. I enjoy all of the quotes that are in there as well. I like to compare the book to my leadership positions that I  held throughout my career. I like to think that I do the right thing but that’s impossible all the time. For the most part, I’ve followed some of his methodology. For example, I once held a position as an Athletic Director at a high school. As I look at “The 5 Levels of Leadership” (J. Maxwell, 2018) I would think that I reached the pinnacle because I had respect from the other faculty and staff members. I went there and completely rebuilt the Physical Education program and Athletic program. I prioritized in an organized fashion and built the foundation. I tried to get people to buy into it. It worked and we had two great programs running well. I taught my partner as much as I could, and he became a much better teacher himself.

I also like some of the laws in the book “Power” (R. Greene, 1998). While it’s a little darker, It does have some helpful strategies. Law #1 is a good one. You never want to look better than your superior. They will take it hard and think you’re coming after their position.
